I just...I mean come on. The kid witnesses his parents covering up a murder, has a schizophrenic mother in an institution, abandoned by his mentor, was made an addict against his will, and has to fight the potential thought that he might become schizophrenic, too. On top of being a child prodigy.
And Meave would have made such a nice addition to the cast, too. Even in a limited girlfriend capacity, too. It's not like there's not precedence. Will and Kevin are/were generally well-used, so was Haley until she was fridged.
...which actually makes me realize a very depressing trend. The ex-wives and girlfriends end up dead (Rossi's ex, Gideon's whatever-she-was, Haley, now Meave) but the men haven't suffered the same fate. Damn, that's going to bug the hell of of me now.
